History

After three years of patiently waiting and actively working to bring an organization they thought would better serve the Latino community at Johnson & Wales University, three women came together to pledge Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc.

In the Spring of 1999, Eva Peña, Rosaura Suarez and Natalia Vasquez overcame all obstacles and established the sorority's Rho Chapter at the university's Providence campus.   In the Spring of 2001, the Rho Chapter welcomed three new Hermanas to their family.  They are Luz Cuevas, Florana Duran, and  Gauddy Ansejo.

The Hermanas were already active campus leaders before they pledged, being members of the Latin American Club and Hermana Eva Peña being a founder of the Dominican Students Association, which received the New Student Organization of the Year Award that Spring as well.

Hermanas of the Rho Chapter have held the following positions at J & W:
-Dominican Students Association (DSA) Executive Board
-Latin American Club (LAC) Executive Board
-Residence Hall Attendant
-Clubs & Organizations Senator

Rho Chapter Hermanas have participated in the following events:

  • "Saquen Las Escobas" - A community service in conjunction with Keep Providence Beautiful and the DSA in which participants gathered to sweep and clean up greater Providence-area neighborhoods.
  • Greek Organizations Retreat: A weekend of brainstorming and bonding with other Greeks and the campus administration to increase awareness of each other and help focus on how to better serve the college community.
  • Presidents Roundtable Dinner: A series of informal gatherings of campus organization presidents to discuss what their respective clubs are doing and how all can better work together.
  • Mathewson Church Soup Kitchen: Hermanas gather with others on Fridays to feed those in need from 6-8 p.m.

Sorority History

Sigma Lambda Upsilon/ Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Incorporated exists to create a bridge between all women committed to seeking the political and social advancement of underrepresented populations. The organization was founded on December 1, 1987 at Binghamton University by Hermana Cynthia Santiago-Guzman, Hermana Adriana Zamora-Tirado, Hermana Carmen Ibeth Garcia-Quiñones and Hermana Carol Elizabeth Torres. Through their efforts, they have created an organization that provides sisterhood and support, while also promoting academic achievement, service to the community and cultural enrichment. Their vision has created a voice for women in an academic setting.

The essence of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/ Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. is epitomized by the diverse cultural backgrounds and customs that allow our Hermanas (sisters) to share each other's heritage. Over a decade since its existence, the impenetrable bond of sisterhood unites Hermanas of African, African-American, Argentinean, Belizian, Brazilian, Cape Verdean, Chicana, Chilean, Colombian, Costa Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Ecuadorian, Filipina, Guatemalan, Haitian, Honduran, Italian, Irish, Jamaican, Jewish, Korean, Mexican, Native American, Nevisian, Nigerian, Panamanian, Paraguayan, Peruvian, Polish, Puerto Rican, Salvadorian, and Uruguayan backgrounds. Through mutual respect, love, courage and support for one another, we share the common goal of uniting and empowering all Hermana's. Our relentless commitment to each other is the reason why we consider our sisterhood lasting Hasta La Muerte!

Though Latina-based, the organization is made up of women from all cultures, religious backgrounds and interests. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, disability, political beliefs, sexual preference, etc.

Sigma Lambda Upsilon/ Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. serves to bridge a gap between the Latino community and the campuses we represent.
