SLU Wins 1st place at
LatinosStep's 10th Anniversary Step Show &
Batanga's SILK 7 National Stroll Competition

New York, NY - The National Performance Team (NPT) of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. (SLU), took this summer by storm, winning LatinosStep's 10th Anniversary Step Show held on August 9th, 2008 at Lehman College and Batanga's SILK 7 National Stroll Competition in New Jersey on June 10th, 2008. With both victories, SLU made history by becoming the first sorority to sweep the summer competitions in the same year.

The Sassy, Lively and Unique Señoritas were determined to make a mark and came out stronger than ever this year. This summer the team would not be denied victory. First, during Silks 7 annual Stroll Show the NPT entertained the crowd with distinctive routines such as the "Michael Jackson," the dynamic salsa stroll, and the "umbrella" stroll. Their creative and energetic performances lead them to victory, walking away with the title of Silk 7 Champs.

With only two months to prepare, the seven member team took the excitement of their Silk victory and focused on the LatinosStep show. What transpired from their hard work and dedication was nothing less than perfection. The NPT captivated the audience with their Wild West theme, precise synchronized steps, and use of Latino flare with NPT's signature Claves routine. The performance won the NPT the LatinosStep title, their second and history making victory of the summer.

"Coming in this year we had a goal for each show and that was to have fun. We did not focus on winning. We were focused on giving the audience a show and representing our great Hermandad (Sorority). Our hard work has paid off and we made history," states NPT Member, Jhoanna Linares.

The summer of 2008 will be one for the record books. Sigma Lambda Upsilon congratulates all the organizations who participated in this year's LatinosStep Competition. The NPT is thrilled to be part of this historic summer as LatinosStep celebrates its tenth year. We look forward to continuing our participation with LatinosStep and entertaining audiences all over the country with our performances.

Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. was founded on December 1, 1987 at Binghamton University as an organization that would provide sisterhood and support while also promoting academic achievement, service to the community and cultural enrichment. Today, the sorority's purpose remains to unite women committed to seeking the political and social advancement of the under-represented populations.
