To Better Our Community
New York, NY -
The Theta Alpha Graduate/Professional Chapter of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas
Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. will team up with over 3,000 fellow
New Yorkers to take part in New York Cares' annual spring volunteer
event, Hands On New York Day, sponsored by Major League Baseball.
This event will take place on Saturday, April 16th, 2005 from 9:30am
to 3:00pm.
The annual New York Cares Hands On New York Day is an expanded day
of volunteering to enhance New York City for the spring. The goal
is to rejuvenate over 50 community spaces in one day. Volunteers will
paint, rake leaves, plant flowers and trees, and much more. This day
will be the kick-off for National Volunteer Week (April 17-23).
"I'm very excited about Hands On New York Day. I'm thrilled to
have the opportunity to participate in this day because it is such
a huge event to help change our five boroughs. I know a lot of planning
goes into this NY Cares event
There are thousands of people from
all walks of life taking part in restoring our City for the spring,"
says Hermana Alejandra Suarez, Community Service Chair of the Theta
Alpha Graduate/Professional Chapter.
This year, the Hermanas of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas
Unidas Sorority, Inc. will be volunteering at Bissel Gardens in the
Bronx, located on 4378 Wickham Avenue. "I ask that others please
join us in this service project. Maybe you've been wondering when
you last volunteered. Well, this is a great opportunity for you to
do your part during National Volunteer Week. Whether it's cleaning,
planting, or painting we are all coming together under one objective...to
revitalize the city! You will really feel great at the end of the
day, knowing you've done your part. Feel free to invite family and
friends as we make a difference and uplift our community."
Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc.
was founded on December 1, 1987 at Binghamton University as an organization
that would provide sisterhood and support while also promoting academic
achievement, service to the community and cultural enrichment. Today,
17 years later, the sorority's purpose remains to unite women committed
to seeking the political and social advancement of the under-represented
populations. Through the Hermanas leadership, the sorority has 26
undergraduate chapters at over 30 campuses, 13 graduate -professional
chapters and has touched the lives of more than 300 women.
