Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. arranges a

Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort for the American Red Cross

Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. has launched a one month long nationwide effort, beginning Tuesday, September 6 thru Tuesday, October 4, 2005, in order to raise money in support of victims affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Hurricane Katrina was a deadly and devastating tropical storm that was the cause of catastrophic damage in the southeastern United States. This cyclone will likely become known as the worst natural disaster ever to hit the United States, with major global economic consequences caused by the severe disruption of oil supplies, exports, and imports. Currently, five million people are without power in the Gulf Coast region, and it may be two months before all power is restored. In addition, some experts predict that one million people will become homeless as a result of the storm.

Katrina may be the deadliest hurricane in the United States of America since the Galveston Hurricane of 1900, which killed up to 12,000 people. The death toll of Katrina, so far, is in the thousands but it will take weeks before accurate numbers are known.

Volunteers of the American Red Cross have been deployed to the hardest hit areas of Katrina's destruction, supplying hundreds of thousands of victims left homeless with vital necessities. By making a donation to the Sigma Lambda Upsilon's Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort, you will assist the Red Cross in providing shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those in need.

Donations can be made either by mail, online or by supporting our Penny Drive, which will be hosted by each chapter of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. All proceeds will go to the American Red Cross. To donate, please visit: http://www.redcross.org or mail checks or money orders to:
