Sigma Lambda LADYS Program Receives Grant From
La Unidad Latina Foundation

Rochester, NY - On Monday, September 20, 2004 the brothers of La Unidad Latina/Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc. announced that this year the Sigma Lambda LADYS Program will be the recipient of a $750 grant provided by La Unidad Latina Foundation.

The grant is awarded to groups, organizations and projects to support the educational
improvement and civic empowerment of the Latino community. The mission of La Unidad Latina Foundation is to promote academic excellence for Latinos. Some of the objectives of the Foundation are to award scholarships and grants to worthy and needy students for the pursuit of higher education and encourage participation of Latinos in educational programs and activities.

La Unidad Latina Foundation was established by the Board of Trustees of Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc. on September 18, 1999 to serve as an independent, nonprofit, non partisan charitable organization dedicated to educational achievement and civic empowerment in the Latino community.

"We are very excited to be receiving this grant. It will definitely assist us in reaching our goals for the LADYS Program…We are grateful for La Unidad Latina Foundation and can't thank the Brothers of La Unidad Latina enough for their generosity. To be able to contribute such an amount to our youth and community shows the magnitude of the organization and the power they have to make a difference… From taking the LADYS on college tours to providing them with transportations and meals on our outings, the grant will definitely come in handy…," said Maria Caldwell-Richart, Vice President of the Theta Epsilon Graduate/Professional Chapter of Sigma Lambda Upsilon.

Sigma Lambda for the Leadership, Advancement, and Development of our Young Sisters is a mentorship program designed and geared toward young women ages 14 to 18 and promotes sisterhood, cultural pride, academic excellence and service to the community within its participants, with an emphasis on college and career preparation.

In the Fall of 2001, the Theta Epsilon Graduate/Professional Chapter first piloted the Sigma Lambda LADYS Program in Buffalo, NY. Since its founding, the Sigma Lambda LADYS Program has graduated seven young women from different high schools in the Buffalo/Rochester area.

Program participants are known as the Sigma Lambda LADYS and work closely with their mentor who, through her experience and background, exposes her mentee to opportunities and experiences she may not receive elsewhere.

The LADYS take part in a variety of community service projects and events with the Theta Epsilon Graduate/Professional Chapter of Sigma Lambda Upsilon, thus developing pride in their culture and an excitement for education.

Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. was founded on December 1, 1987 at Binghamton University as an organization that would provide sisterhood and support while also promoting academic achievement, service to the community and cultural enrichment. Almost seventeen years since its establishment, the organization has expanded to 30 schools across the country, touching the lives of more than 300 women.
