SLU Celebrates 17 Years of Existence

New Haven, CT- From December 3rd through December 5th, 2004, the Hermanas of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. celebrated their 17 annual National Founders' Day Convention at Yale University in Connecticut.

Hermanas took part various events, hosted by Pi Chapter and the National Board Convention Planning Committee. The weekend was filled with bonding activities, thought provoking workshops and an amazing banquet and Hermana brunch.

"As the year comes to an end, we have the opportunity to reflect on the Sorority's accomplishments and our goals for the future. However, in order to know where you are and where you are going; you need to know where you came from. I would like to recognize our Founding Mothers: Cynthia Santiago-Guzman, Adriana Zamora-Tirado, Carmen Ibeth Garcia-Quinones and Carol Elizabeth Torres for their courage, support and commitment," said Alina Ocasio, President of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc.

Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority Inc. was founded on December 1, 1987 at Binghamton University. The organization was created to not only serve as a voice for women in an academic setting, but to provide sincere sisterhood and unconditional support while actively promoting academic achievement, service to the community, and cultural enrichment.

Today, 17 years later, the sorority's purpose remains to unite women committed to seeking the political and social advancement of the under-represented populations. Through the Hermanas leadership, the sorority has 26 undergraduate chapters at over 30 campuses, 13 graduate/professional chapters and over 300 members.

The Hermanas of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority Inc. continue the legacy of their Founders' vision by effectively bridging the gap between the Latino community and the campuses they represent.
