Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Seņoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. exists to create a bridge between all women committed to seeking the advancement of Latino(as). The organization was founded at the State University of New York at Binghamton on December 1, 1987 by Cynthia Santiago, Adriana Zamora, Carmen Garcia, and Carol Torres. Through their efforts, they have created an organization that provides sisterhood and support, while also promoting academic achievement, service to the community and cultural enrichment. Their vision has created a voice for women in an academic setting.

The essence of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Seņoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. is epitomized by the diverse cultural backgrounds and customs that allow our Hermanas to share each other's heritage. Through mutual respect, trust, honesty, and academic support, we also share this common goal-to unite and empower all Hermanas. Our relentless commitment to each other is the reason why we consider our sisterhood lasting:

The eternal and unconditional love and respect shared among all Hermanas, which embraces Sincerity, Loyalty and Unity.

The pursuit of knowledge to create positive changes for ourselves, our families and our communities.

Leadership/Caudillaje
The self-empowerment and self-motivation which inspires Hermanas to be leaders and role models in our communities.

Cultural Awareness/Enriqueza Cultural
The awareness and pride in our distinct backgrounds that allow us to share our heritage in order to raise consciousness within our Hermandad and amongst the outside community.

Service to Community and Campus/ Servicio a la Comunidad y la Universidad
The commitment to public service that is our responsibility as an organization dedicated to the advancement of women and the Latino community.
