Omega Chapter

Old Dominion University

HISTORY

On March 30, 2002 four women founded the first and only Latina Organization on the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. These four women, H. Dahlia Bibbins Velarde, H. Jessica Tirado, H. Mayra Espinoza, and H. Sonia Besares; recognized a need for diversity and wanted to create a voice for Latinas on their campus. They sought out an organization that would inspire them with its professionalism, determination, leadership, cultural  awareness, academic excellence and most of all an everlasting sisterhood. Since then, the Hermanas of the Omega Chapter have devoted themselves to their community and campus, efforts that were recognized in 2003 via an NAACP Award for Organization of the Year and a Cacique Award for Leadership.
