raices2012

Sigma Lambda Upsilon/SeƱoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. is the proud sponsor of our annual National RAICES (Roots); a week long, series of events, which are held nationally during the last week of September. Every chapter enthusiastically participates by hosting a variety of events while promoting and celebrating Latino heritage and culture on their respective campus and/or community. You will find at any given moment throughout the week, our Hermanas offering a variety of events that are enlightening, thought-provoking and focused on cultural enrichment, women's issues, community service and scholarship. All of which revolve around the chosen topic for the year. At this time, we are excited to announce our RAICES theme for 2012:

MUJERES (WOMEN): PLANTING THE SEEDS OF PROGRESS

This year's RAICES Week will take place from Monday, September 24th through Friday, September 29th 2012. As the title of our 2012 RAICES Week implies, women plant the seed to progression. Historically speaking, women have had to carry-on multiple roles at once in order to keep themselves, their families, careers and mankind in general going. A major example is the fact that women are the only sex that can bear children, continuing the growth and evolution of humanity. This theme will focus on various aspects of the lives of women, more specifically on our reproductive rights and the implications of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

We want our theme to stem from the idea of women being powerful forces in our simplest form: to be able to give the gift of life. From here we can further discuss this aforementioned power and elaborate on how it has been used against us and how with the passage of the ACA, we and other traditionally marginalized groups can claim victory in the right step to progress.
