Theta Theta Graduate/Professional Chapter

Although it was an unconventional cause, Theta Theta knew it was worth it.

For four months, the Hermanas of the Theta Theta Graduate/Professional chapter in Washington D.C., Virginia and Maryland raised funds for a scholarship that would be awarded to a young Latina mother going to college.

The Hermanas were given the idea by Jessica Tirado, a recipient of a similar scholarship. In 1998, the Nu Chapter-University gave mothers money for college through the “Madres Award.” Tirado was one of the winners and gave the Hermanas the idea to revive the scholarship. “We had an amazing example of what a young mother can be in Jessica,” said Stacy Terrell, president of Theta Theta. “We knew there was great potential in the applicant pool.”

Always ready for a challenge, Terrell said the Hermanas of the Theta Theta Chapter decided to try to revive the scholarship. The scholarship was important to the chapter because it helped them support Latinas facing difficult obstacles yet continuing to purse a higher education. Fundraisers included everything from a happy hour around Valentine’s Day to donations from other Hermanas.

The chapter teamed up with the Northern Virginia Urban League’s Alexandria Resource Mother’s Program and the T.C. Williams High School to receive nominations and applications for the receipts. Susana Quant was the recipient of the Theta Theta 2010 Book Scholarship. She received the award at the second annual Mother’s Day Brunch, Nuestras Madres. The $300 award was meant to help Quant pay for textbooks this fall.

“Congratulations Theta Theta Hermanas for taking small strides to positively impact our communities and working to increase
the number of women seeking and attaining higher education,” says Mayra Espinoza, supporter of Theta Theta.

Terrell said the chapter hopes to keep the scholarship going and wants to increase the award to $500 next year.

Alpha Delta Chapter: Blooming Beautifully

Alpha Delta Chapter has gone far and beyond this Fall semester and that is no surprise. Kicking off the 2009 academic year with Raices Week and the annual showcase “Viva La Raza: Passport to Latin America” among many other service events, this semester proved to be a time of growth and efficiency. During Raices Week they had 3 programs and a community service.

  • • September 21- Traveling Beyond Your Resources: a program designed to help students see their resources for volunteering in the state as well as around the world in collaboration with Peace Corps, Americorps, and the Career Center.
  • September 22- Generation Fix: program focused on students experiences with volunteering, its history, and ways that our generation can help the world by just doing a few hours of volunteering.
  • September 24- Karaoke for Cause: collected books and donations while people sang.
  • September 25- Volunteer at Child Care Center: Read to children.
  • October 8– Viva La Raza- Passport to Latin America: performances that showcased Latin American cultures.
  • November 11th- Very Young Girls: a movie screening of the captivating documentary "Very Young Girls" in collaboration with Omega Phi Beta and GEMS (Girls Education and Mentoring Services) The movie exposes human trafficking of young girls as early as 13 in our own backyards (Bushwick, Bedstuy, Harlem, the Bronx, and many more). A panel included a women studies professor and a member of a Peer Educating organization on campus.
  • December 8th– Hook’d on Phonics: a spelling bee game hosted by Hermana Michelle Wright.
For “Viva La Raza: Passport to Latin America” Alpha Delta Hermanas along with Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Inc. invited a wide variety of performers to showcase Latin American cultures, “The cultural acts were amazing and even our very own J. Seary performed! People were amazed to see how Stony Brook can see such diversity within the Latin American culture!” says Yamilka Mena. Other acts included the Brazilian Group, Mistura Perfeita, and children of the Diversity School in Central Islip,
who performed a Bomba Plena from Puerto Rico. Grupo Destino performed Merengue and Bachata from the Dominican Republic and Grupo Ayazamana performed a cultural Ecuadorian dance.

“Hook’d on Phonics” was another very successful event, over 100 people attended. “It was packed! People were even standing up towards the back of the room. We had giveaways such as bookmarks and Barnes and Noble gift cards. Everyone came up to us in the end congratulating us on such an amazing and fun event! We even received praise from contestants who lost!” says Yamilka, NALFO president. To support our national partnership with Better World Books, Alpha Delta collaborated with National Residence Hall Honorary to foster non-greek relations. “The book drive has been amazing! Over 2 huge boxes have been filled in just a little over a month,” says Yamilka. Alpha Delta Chapter is excited to show their campus what they have in stores for 2010 year. The chapter will be turning 5 years old this Spring and are very much in touch with the Hermanas that have helped paved the way. Yamilka proudly says, “we have a great relationship with our alumna. They give us advice all the time and they come out to support whenever they can. Being an Hermana for almost two years, I have seen this chapter bloom beautifully into an amazing Hermandad that will forever remain in my heart.”
