“Success through literacy and uplifting our communities.”

September 12, 2000
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Sigma Lambda Upsilon/ Seņoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority,  Inc. proudly identifies Literacy as its national philanthropy, and advocates it as a means of ensuring the empowerment and success of our nation and of  the people of its diverse communities.

Sigma Lambda Upsilon strives to encourage literacy, not only as an activity, but also as an asset that affords limitless possibilities; hence, promoting  the acts of reading and writing as enjoyable, exciting, and empowering.

As a national organization, Sigma Lambda Upsilon will promote literacy throughout the United States via our chapters’ involvement in nationwide initiatives. Each year we will target a particular population, defined by age, need, or location, around which all of our philanthropy efforts will focus.

This year, our initiatives will emphasize the importance of literacy in the lives of children and youth (up to 22 years of age). It is our intention to bring the richness and power of literature to the minds of children.

Our goal is to collaboratively collect and distribute 1,000 books to schools, organizations, or other related agencies that provide direct services to children and youth, and dedicate 1,000 hours to literacy efforts across our chapters by August 15, 2001.

Our work will be based on the premise that literacy serves to uplift our communities by fostering confidence within our young people, so that they may advance toward their educational, personal, and professional goals. In turn, our children may begin working toward establishing a foundation of success for our communities and our nation as whole.

Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Seņoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc., is a non-profit, Greek-lettered organization established in 1987 to provide  sisterhood, support, promote academic achievement, service to the community and cultural enrichment across college campuses and within communities across the country.
