Sigma Lambda Upsilon

Kappa Chapter

Princeton University

HISTORY

In the Fall of 1992, four Latinas at Princeton University decided that there was a need for an organization which would not only contribute to the advancement of the Princeton Latino community but also create a voice and a sisterhood for Latinas on campus. In addition, the organization would also provide community service to the university as well as the surrounding Princeton, NJ communities.

These four women sought out the Hermanas of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc., and on March, 4, 1993, they established the first and only Latina sorority at Princeton University.

The Kappa Chapter has instituted many of the following Sorority traditions on Princeton's campus: RAICES - a week long series of events that is simultaneously held throughout each Chapter of Sigma Lambda Upsilon LATINO AWARENESS WEEK - a week long series of events to celebrate Latino Heritage Month AVANCE SCHOLARSHIP FUND - our scholarship that is awarded to a college bound Princeton Latina high school student.

We, the Hermanas of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc., thank and greatly appreciate these four determined women who paved the way for the foundation of our organization at Princeton University.
