Iota Chapter History

Sigma Lambda Upsilon/ Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc., is dedicated to creating a bridge between all women committed to seeking the advancement of Latinas(os). We are a non-for-profit organization found in 1987 at Binghamton University by four strong Latinas. In April 1993 the Hermandad came to Cornell University. The founding Hermanas of Iota Chapter include:

Hermana Monique Carrero-Tagle
Hermana Diamar Román Martinez
Hermana Claudia Ramirez
Hermana Sally Bisonó
Hermana Kim Oriol
Hermana Vanessa Anníbali

This past April, La Hermandad celebrated its 15th year at Cornell University which is a testament to our continuing dedication to the Latin@ community, Cornell community, Ithaca community, and the Hermanas. Our passion sparks our desire to provide support (both academic and personal) to all Latinas, and interactive programming to increase awareness of Latino culture and fostering leadership among women in Ithaca and the surrounding communities.

The 28 women of Iota Chapter who have vowed to uphold the goals of the Sorority Hasta La Muerte, have never let issues or problems be ignored which is evident in their participation since the 1993 Day Hall Takeover to the present lucha for ethnic studies.

Hermanas have been involved in these organizations:
ALS (African-Latino Society of Ithaca College),
Ithaca College Journal of Race, Culture, Gender & Ethnicity,
LOLU (La Organizacion de Latinas Universitarias),
LAL (La Asociación Latina),
MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chican@s de Aztlán) (co-founder),
