A Girl Like Me: Café con Leche Series ... Join the Hermanas of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. for “A Girl Like Me.” Why is it always a trigueñita versus blanquita issue? Why is lighter skin considered more attractive? Why does skin color matter so much within the same culture? Inspired by the 7-minute independent film entitled “A Girl Like Me” by Kiri Thomas, this discussion focuses on the issues of race and color faced by minority women living in a “Barbie” society. How can we balance our cultural values and the feminist ideology? La Hora del Cuento ... Want to practice Spanish? Like reading to and playing with children? Join us as we read Spanish and Latino-themed books to Ithaca youth followed by arts and crafts. Very Young Girls Film Screening and Panel Discussion ... Very Young Girls is an expose of human trafficking that follows thirteen and fourteen year old girls as they are seduced, abused, and sold on New York's streets by pimps, and treated as adult criminals by the police. Suggested donation of $2. Proceeds will benefit GEMS, a nonprofit organization located in NYC that serves young women and girls aged between 12 and 21 who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation, human trafficking, and violence.
