HISTORY

On March 26, 2005 the Alpha Zeta chapter of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc was established at Virginia Commonwealth University by Hermana Jennifer Villalobos. She saw a need for an organization to empower and uplift latinos in the community as well as provide a voice and sisterhood for Latinas on the campus. Since it's founding, Alpha Zeta is proud to have participated in numerous community service programs that uphold the goals and ideals of the organization.

 

CHAPTER ACHIEVEMENTS

*April 27, 2010- The Hermanas won 1st place in the Multicultural Greek Council's (MGC) Stroll Off Competition.

*April 2010- The Hermanas received campus recognition for their Community Service.

*March 3, 2010- Published in the school newspaper for their Human Trafficking programming event co-sponsored with the Bachelors of Social Work Student Association (BSWSA)

*Fall 2009-The Alpha Zeta Chapter established an ongoing partnership with the Neighborhood Resource Center (NRC) in Fulton Hill.

*December 2009 at Founder's Day Convention- Cacique Award for Sisterhood and the Avance Award for Community Service

*November 2009- Awarded best Stroll from MGC.

* 2008-2009 -Awarded for  Leadership and Community Engagement

*  December 2008 at Founder's Convention Day Convention- Received the Cacique Award for Community Service

SIGNATURE EVENTS

“Meet the Señoritas”-Each Fall semester

Participates in Annual Diabetes walk in Washington, DC-October

“Human trafficking forum” co-sponsored with the Bachelors of Social Work Student Association

“A Girl Like Me” co-sponsored with Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

Participates in annual MS walk in Washington, DC-Spring Semester

As of Fall 2009, ongoing partnership with the Neighborhood Resource Center (www.nrccafe.org)

*In Fall 2009, for RAICES week, our Dancing for Literacy raised over 100 books.
